CORVETTE MANTA
RAY:
The
Manta Ray, the GM styling concept car, was designed by
Larry Shinoda commissioned personally by the head of GM,
Bill Mitchell. A dramatic two-toned car that looked as
much like a Mako Shark greatly influenced the Corvette
styling as from 1968. Bill Mitchell, a deep sea fishing
lover, has gotten the idea while watching a Mako Shark
glide. The Mantaray, also named as Mako Shark II, was
developed from the Mako Shark concept car. The paint scheme
that gradated from blue/grey on the top to silver/white
on the bottom, resembled the Mako Shark color. The Manta
Ray is powered by the Chevrolet 427 cu.in ZL-1 aluminum
engine and is teamed with automatic transmission which
controlled electrically from a rotary selector. The special
design body featured retractable rear spoiler, concealed
license plate and extendable bumper. Special cast aluminum
wheels have a deep-dish design, with thin fins forming
a pattern similar to a wire-spoke wheel.
